Charles Heyder

Graduate Student

Degree Sought: M.S.
Major Professor:  Dr. Matt DiMaggio

Charles Heyder is a graduate research assistant focusing on identifying reproductive roles for the SREB receptor family in zebrafish, green-spotted pufferfish, and mummichogs. Working with Dr. Casey Murray and Dr. Matthew DiMaggio, he hopes to build on established SREB knowledge and gain a better understanding of how this receptor family functions in the context of fish reproduction. Charles is seeking a Master of Science degree in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences.

Charles is originally from New Jersey but received his undergraduate degree from Roger Williams University in 2022 with a B.S in Marine Biology and a B.A in Aquaculture and Aquarium Science. He spent his time gaining aquaculture experience in the university's wet-lab and founding the school's fishing club. Following graduation, he spent two years working as an aquaculture support technician at the EPA facility in Narragansett, Rhode Island. There he worked with mummichogs, performing  embryonic PFAS exposure assays.  He was able to gain a great deal of experience working with mummichogs and learning about their biology, which led him to his current research project where he hopes to expand on that knowledge. When Charles is not hanging out with mummichogs, he enjoys fishing, watching movies, and reading comics.
